Breast Procedures for Women

Whether restoring or enhancing the female breasts, there are always options. The primary goal of elective breast surgery is to improve symmetry while enhancing the natural breast contour and shape. Dr. Bounds will consider your overall body proportions, breast size, skin elasticity and your suitability for the procedure you are considering to determine the best approach to achieve the results you desire.

The information below is an introduction to various surgical breast procedures. If you are interested in pursuing plastic surgery, a consultation with Dr. Bounds will help you decide what procedures might benefit you.

Not all women are born with perfect breasts. Many women are born with uneven breasts or breast that lack normal size and volume. It is simply Mother Nature's way to make us all a bit different. Nonetheless, many women are still self-conscious about the appearance of their breasts.

Many women choose surgical procedures which help match or enhance the breasts. The method will depend on the condition of the breasts. The process may involve implants, lifting, reduction or a combination of the three.

Select the procedure you are considering from the following descriptions for more detailed information.

Breast Augmentation - Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the shape and size of a woman's breast. Additionally, women who have had a child or lost a considerable amount of weight may find their breast size has diminished over time and breast augmentation surgery is chosen to restore a natural, pleasing appearance.

Breast Lift - Mastopexy, more commonly referred to as breast lift, is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon is able to reshape and raise sagging breasts. Mastopexy can also help to reduce the size of the dark skin around the nipple, known as the areola. If the breasts are small or have lost some of their natural volume - after pregnancy, for example - breast augmentation along with breast lift can help to increase natural looking firmness and size.

Breast Reduction - Breast reduction - known as reduction mammaplasty - is performed to give women smaller, more optimally shaped breasts that are better proportioned to the rest of their body. The procedure removes glandular tissue, fat, and skin from the breasts. The result are breasts that are smaller, lighter, firmer and more in proportion to the woman's body shape and size. Breast reduction can also reduce the size dark skin surrounding the nipple, known as the areola. Women with overly large breasts may experience a number of physical and medical problems. Symptoms can include back and neck pain, breathing problems, skin irritation, and possible skeletal deformities. Woman or in many cases, teenage girls with unusally large breast may feel extremely self-conscious.

Breast Reconstruction - Advanced medical techniques have made it possible for surgeons to re-create a breast to replace one that has been removed because of disease that is very close in shape and appearance to a natural breast. Breast reconstruction is often possible immediately following breast removal surgery (mastectomy). The patient can then wake up with a breast mound already in place, which spares thepatient the experience of seeing themself with no breast.

While there are many options available in post-mastectomy reconstruction, you and your surgeon should discuss the one that's best for you.
