Breast Reconstruction Surgery
Virginia Beach

After mastectomy, women now have the option to restore a breast that resembles their own in both size and shape. Breast reconstruction can be carried out at the same time as the mastectomy procedure, commonly know as immediate breast reconstruction, or at any time after the mastectomy has been completed, known as delayed breast reconstruction.

When you choose to have breast reconstruction surgery is based upon your personal desires, your current health condition, and the possible need for additional therapies because chemotherapy or radiation may affect the timing of certain forms of breast reconstruction.

In most cases, breast reconstruction is performed in conjunction with and immediately following the mastectomy, giving you the opportunity to wake up from your surgery with a newly reconstructed breast.

Breast reconstruction is performed thousands of times each year on women who have lost one or more breasts. There are several approaches to breast reconstruction that vary according to the type of mastectomy and the condition of the breast skin.

How does Breast Reconstruction surgery work?

If a woman's breast skin is loose and thick enough, reconstruction may be achieved through an implant or prosthesis. When there is not enough skin to accommodate an implant, additional skin is needed from another area. The donor skin is called a "flap" that consists of the skin, muscle and blood vessels sustaining the skin.
